April 13 - Sentry Trail (Antelope Island)

After another week of rain/snow (almost 4 ft in the mountains), it's another trip to Antelope Island. The good news is that this wacky weather has kept the biting gnats at bay. The bad news, it's another dreary day. It's supposed to clear around 8am but by the looks of the sky (and the intermittent rain) I'm not holding my breath.

Crossing the causeway, the sun is rising over the mountains to the east but raining on me and to the west.

There's a pretty rainbow touching down somewhere in the middle of Farmington Bay.

It little farther down the causeway, I see the other end in the Salt Lake.

Still many Shovelers,

Gulls, Avocets, Grebes, and lots of Coots.

I reach the island and head south in the rain. (But there's snow in the mountains.)

An extremely quiet drive down to the rain with only 1 bison sighting - a pair of them moving south.

But it's sunny at the Ranch with a south wind hopefully blowing in the blue skies soon.

I look towards Sentry Peak and see some bison where the trail heads uphill. Between the weather and the bison, my hike might not happen.

To kill some time, I head over to check on the Owl. I haven't seen him since Fall. On the way over, I see my favorite DNR volunteer. It's been Fall since I've seen him as well. He tells me he didn't see the Great Horned Owl this morning but I'll have a peek anyway. (Sadly, there's no mated pair this year.)

I head over and quickly (and happily) find the Owl high in a Popular tree. Yea!

As I head back to my car, Sentry Peak is visible (and sunny) though the north side of the island looks nasty.

So I gear up and start up the muddy road.

Lots of Western Meadowlarks

and Horned Larks singing this morning.

I'm watching those bison and I do think I won't make it around the corner but I have hope.

I make it past Mushroom Springs and arrive at the corner. Hmmm, no bison. Could I have mistaken rocks for bison -- I've done that before.

I don't make it far up the hill when yep, there's bison over to the left. And they see me

and they start to run across the trail to the right. I look to my right and I see the tops of the heads of more bison.

Oops, they're standing, tails up. They don't like me.

I try to see if there are babies but never get far enough up the hill to get a good look because wisdom prevails. Time to I head back down the hill leaving them in peace.

There's more black clouds now over the Ranch; hoping, I don't get rained on.

Thankfully, I make it back safely and dry.

I head back north (hitting some rain) before heading over to the west side of the island.

Not much over here other than a couple of bison on the upside of Bison Point.

Quick day but I had a bison encounter and got to see the Owl again. Good day!
